Stress also releases hormones into our bodies that can raise blood sugar levels. The added pressures that sometimes cause stress can also make it harder to stick to our usual diabetes management routine.

  • Look for patterns—Keep track of stress levels whenever you check your blood sugar levels. See if there’s any connection between the two.
  • Take control—Once you find a pattern, learn different tricks and techniques to counteract the stress. Try to avoid things you know cause you anxiety and exercise if you’re able, as it can also help relieve stress and lower your blood sugar level.
  • Get help—Sometimes meeting with a psychologist or clinical social worker is the best option for figuring out what stresses you the most, solving your most stressful problems, or teaching you new skills and strategies for coping with the stress.
