A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted,  This damages the brain tissue. This usually happens because of a blood clot in the brain or neck, and can cause movement problems, pain, numbness, and difficulty thinking, remembering, or speaking.

Having diabetes increases your risk for stroke, and while some of the other risk factors:

  • being over 55 or
  • having a family history of stroke or
  • African American heritage

The above are beyond your control, you can take steps to tackle other risk factors such as:(

  • not being physically active,
  • smoking,
  • being overweight, or
  • having high blood pressure)

Managing these will help you lower your risk of having a stroke.
